The ICAA was pleased to host two artists in residency, & , at the Cast Hall for the month of January. Elisa Bertaglia & Gabriele Grones are two independent Italian artists based in Brooklyn. Their individual residency projects, in conversation with each other and the ICAA’s Cast Collection, will culminate in a collaborative special exhibition later this year at the Cast Hall.
Elisa Bertaglia, originally a painter, uses diverse mediums and techniques for eclectic and experimental works including wall drawings, sculptures, ceramics, installations, large and small-scale paintings, and site-specific projects. She approaches her work philosophically and conceptually, investigating ‘the symbol’ in contemporary society. She has developed a peculiar vision of time and space in her work influenced by distinct philosophical concepts.
Bertaglia has presented her work internationally in various venues, galleries and museums, including: Hicsunt Leones, solo show at Palazzo Madama, Turin, Italy (2020); CAF - Nebula, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Saitama, Japan (2019); Cendriers, MZ Galerie, Augsburg, Germany (2019); Progetto Borca, Borca, Italy (2014); 54th Venice Biennale, Academy Pavilion, Arsenale, Venice, Italy (2011); Art and Science, Guggenheim Museum, Venice, Italy (2010).
In this residency project, Bertaglia is studying and reinterpreting small details of nature taken from decorative and architectural elements preserved at ICAA, in connection and dialogue with other artworks from the Greenwood Cemetery and the Rubin Museum. She will create a series of paintings inspired by these locations, using oil on rose gold sheets affixed to wooden panels.
Gabriele Grones is a painter and visual artist, who creates series of paintings that explore specific and connected subjects such as natural details, figures, or compositions. In the installation of his works, Grones often showcases the unexpected connections between these pieces, promoting dialogue and symbolic analysis. His works evoke the atmospheres of early Flemish portraiture and metaphysical painting.
Grones took part in two editions of the Venice Biennale: Atelier Aperti in 2005 and Lo Stato dell’Arte – Art Academies Pavilion in 2011. Recent solo exhibitions in 2022 include Gabriele Grones. Conversazioni at Ca' Pesaro, Museum of Modern Art in Venice. His work has also been exhibited in venues such as: National Portrait Gallery (London); Royal Society of Painters (London); MEAM Museum (Barcelona); MART Museum (Rovereto); Palazzo Fulcis Museum (Belluno, Italy); Fort Wayne Museum (IN, USA); Museum of Arts (Cluj, Romania), National Museum of Fine Arts (Valletta, Malta); Volkskunstmuseum (Innsbruck).
For his residency project, Grones analyzes the iconographical elements of the Cast Collection, such as floral decorations. Examining antique, modern, and contemporary art, he explores the ways these iconographies are present across cultures and time periods. His new series, inspired by the Cast Collection, will connect with the details and symbols of classical sculpture.
This residency was facilitated by Residency Unlimited (RU), a non-profit art organization that supports the creation, presentation, and dissemination of contemporary art through its unique residency program and year-round public programs.
